How to properly store your cider?

Storage Position

To store cider optimally, there is no need for a specific position, unlike some wines that require precise bottle orientation.

Cider offers total flexibility regarding storage: it can be kept either upright or lying down without any impact on its quality.

In contrast, wine sealed with natural cork requires horizontal storage. This position keeps the cork moistened, preventing it from drying out and ensuring the bottle remains in airtight. A dry cork could lead to air infiltration, which might compromise the quality of the wine over time.

Storage after opening

The shelf life of cider once opened depends on several factors. First and foremost is the quality of the cider; high-quality ciders tend to better preserve their organoleptic properties, the full range of qualities perceived by our five senses.

Another key element is pasteurization. If a cider is unpasteurized (as is the case with ciders from our shop…) it has a shorter shelf life than one that has been pasteurized.

How you store it after opening is also crucial. It is best to keep it in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life and maintain its freshness and flavor. However, for optimal freshness, we recommend consuming it within 2 days of opening.

When comparing the shelf life of wine and cider after opening, wine tends to last slightly longer, usually between 3 to 5 days. Beyond that period, wine begins to lose its flavor profile. To prevent a drop in quality, it should be kept in the refrigerator and stored at a temperature not exceeding 15°C.

Serving temperature

The serving temperature of cider is essential to fully appreciate its flavor. Generally, cider is best enjoyed when served chilled, between 8°C and 12°C, though this can vary depending on the type of cider. A sxeet cider is best savored at a slightly cooler temperature, while a drier cider should be served slightly warmer to fully appreciate its aroma and depth.

For a perry, it is recommended to enjoy it at a temperature between 8°C and 12°C to fully experience all its flavors.

Regarding red wine, the recommended serving range is generally between 12°C and 18°C. For whte and rosé wines, the temperature range is between 7°C and 12°C.

As for beers, the optimal serving temperature varies from 5°C to 11°C. It is important to be cautious with the temperature, as serving high-character beers too cold can result in a loss of aromas.

Storing unopened Cider

To preserve unopened cider optimally, it is advisable to store it in a dark place with a stable ambient temperature, such as a cellar or a pantry. This ensures its flavor profile remains at its best. A sealed bottle of cider can be kept for at least one year after bottling.

But don’t worry, the ciders we offer can age perfectly in your cellar if these storage conditions are met!

Similarly to cider, unopened red wine is sensitive to light and temperature. However, unlike most ciders, unopened red wines can generally be stored for an average of two years, or even longer for certain vintages.
